What this tour is about:
This is a 2-hour exploration of the residential and bazaar neighbourhood of Malleswaram. This area is home to ‘upper-caste’ Kannada and Tamil speaking families, many of whom are long-time residents. The market reflects the food traditions of these communities; thus offering a glimpse into authentic vegetarian South Indian cuisine. In addition, this area also has a busy market offering a wide range of clothing, kitchen implements and prayer paraphranelia. It attracts many people from other parts of Bangalore and you will find many shops selling snacks and popular street food to cater to shoppers.
Places we visit:
We begin the tour at the temple of Kaadu Malleswara, the patron deity of this neighbourhood. Accompanied by a knowledgeable foodie, we will then walk through the market (the main thoroughfare as well as tiny by-lanes) and explore its culinary delights. There are a wide variety of shops selling fruits and vegetables, spice powders, coffee, papads, ghee, pickles and condiments. Your food-guide will explain how these are used in the cuisine, and will answer any questions you have. We'll stop at a couple of eateries to sample the offerings (snacks, both savoury and sweet, are very popular here). Look out for seasonal specialities and festival offerings. Come hungry!
